One command, multiple workflows

Run /decision-journal in Claude Code to start a new decision. Add an argument to switch modes.

/decision-journal

New Decision

Walk through the full 6-step process. Claude asks one question at a time, helps you dig deeper, and saves a structured markdown file when you're done.

Review

Come back to a past decision and evaluate the outcome. Compare your predictions to reality, separate luck from skill, and extract lessons for the future.

Continue

Resume an incomplete decision from where you left off. The skill detects which step you were on and picks up from there.

Quick Mode

For simpler decisions that don't need the full process. Compresses to the essentials: problem, three options, the most important thing, and a confidence score.

The Process

Six steps to a clear decision

Based on Shane Parrish's Clear Thinking framework. The skill walks you through each step conversationally—no templates to fill out, just an ongoing dialogue.

1

Define the Problem

Start with what you're facing, then dig deeper. The skill challenges you to find the root cause, distinguish symptoms from real problems, and calibrate importance with the test of time.

2

Explore Options

Generate at least three approaches. For each one, the skill asks "and then what?"—pushing you into second-level thinking. Then a premortem: imagine it failed, what went wrong?

3

Evaluate

Identify the one criterion that matters most. Apply three lenses: your future self, a friend's advice, and someone you respect. Rate information quality and rank your options.

4

Timing

Score consequentiality and reversibility. High stakes and hard to undo? Take more time. Low stakes and reversible? Decide now. Set stop conditions and a first-loss point.

5

Margin of Safety

Find a smaller test before fully committing. Set concrete trip wires—specific signals that trigger a re-evaluation. Define your commander's intent and pick an accountability partner.

6

Document & Review

Record your confidence level, predictions at 1 month, 6 months, and 1 year, and what would prove you wrong. The skill saves a structured markdown file and sets review dates.

Output

Structured markdown, every time

Every decision is saved as a markdown file in decisions/. Here's what a completed entry looks like.
